DIRECTORY: Professional services and training opportunities

The Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) is one of 20 academic centers funded in the U.S. by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease. The UCSD CFAR provides service and training opportunities to help its members and the San Diego biotech community develop improved therapies for HIV infection and associated diseases. The UCSD CFAR currently has five basic science cores that offer specialized services to local scientists. The UCSD CFAR also has cores that help with clinical trials and statistics. Finally, the UCSD CFAR awards small grants to junior investigators in HIV/AIDS research and to investigators who are new to HIV/AIDS research, both in San Diego and selected foreign countries.

The San Diego AIDS Education and Training Center (AETC), based at UCSD's Owen Clinic, is in the Pacific region of the AIDS Education and Training Center. The mission of th AETC is to provide health care professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to care for HIV-infected patients, to increase the numbers of trained health care professionals working with HIV-infected patients, and to respond to the needs of emerging populations and the changing face of the epidemic. The AETC provides clinical training through a mini-residency program for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and registered nurses.
